How to Balance Your Sacral Chakra
Jul 24, 2023by Anjali Kelling
As part of the Summer Holistic Rebalancing Programme at The HEAL Institute, Anjali continues her research on rebalancing each chakra. This week she shares tips for the second chakra.
Following on from the root chakra that I wrote about last week, the sacral chakra is the second of the seven main chakras in the body and is located below the navel, about two inches below the belly button. The sacral chakra has a feminine energy and is symbolised by a flower and crescent moon. Elementally, the sacral chakra is associated with water, and its mantra is, “I feel.” It is associated with the colour orange, and the emotions of pleasure, creativity, and sexuality.
Now imagine our spine as an air traffic control tower. It receives sensory data, night and day, which it diffuses to various part of the spinal column. When our body operates in peak state and our sacral chakra is balanced, we feel confident, joyful, and connected to our bodies and sexuality. The sacral chakra is said to be responsible for our ability to feel and express emotions, as well as our capacity for creativity and sensuality. Emotionally, this chakra is connected to our feelings of self-worth.
By adopting healthy habits, we can bring our chakras into balance and experience a huge boost in happiness and well-being. However, when the sacral chakra gets blocked, overworked, obstructed, or repressed, we experience various physical and mental ailments making us feel numb, stuck, or unable to express ourselves.
Issues with this chakra can also be seen via problems with the associated organs, like urinary tract infections, lower back pain, and impotency. A lot of emotions of anger and fear stem from a closed off second chakra. This can be shown as excessive boundaries, poor social skills, and attitudes towards loved ones.
A deficient sacral chakra can cause a person to isolate themselves from others and prevent them from opening up in intimate relationships. It might make them apathetic and unable to one’s ability to enjoy life.
If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, it may be helpful to work on balancing your sacral chakra. There are many different ways to do this, so find a method that works for you. With a little effort, you can open your sacral chakra and experience the benefits of a balanced and healthy energy centre.
If you feel the need to rebalance your second chakra, here are some practices that may help:
- Embrace Creativity. Engaging in creative activities can help stimulate and balance the sacral chakra. Explore artistic expressions such as painting, drawing, writing, dancing, or playing a musical instrument. Allow yourself to tap into your creative flow and express yourself freely.
- Emotional Awareness and Healing: The sacral chakra is closely linked to emotions. Take time to acknowledge and understand your own emotions. Journaling, therapy, or talking to a trusted friend can help you process and release any emotional blockages that may be affecting your second chakra.
- Emotional Release: Find healthy ways to release stagnant emotions from your body. This can be done through physical activities like yoga, dancing, or any form of exercise that allows you to move and release tension. You can also try techniques such as breath work or meditation to bring awareness to emotions and let them flow.
- Sensuality and Pleasure: Explore activities that enhance your sensual experience. Take a warm bath with essential oils, indulge in a massage, or spend time in nature to connect with your senses. Engage in activities that bring you pleasure, such as listening to music, enjoying delicious food, or engaging in hobbies that you enjoy.
- Water Therapy: Water is associated with the sacral chakra. Take a swim, soak in a bathtub, or simply spend time near a body of water like a lake or ocean. Visualise the water flowing through your body, cleansing and balancing your second chakra.
- Orange Colour Therapy: The sacral chakra is associated with the colour orange. Surround yourself with this colour to stimulate and balance the chakra. Wear orange clothing, incorporate orange objects in your environment, or visualise a warm, radiant orange light filling and energising your sacral chakra.
- Affirmations and Mantras: Repeat positive affirmations or mantras that relate to the sacral chakra. Examples include "I am creative and expressive," "I embrace my sensuality and pleasure," or "I allow my emotions to flow freely”. Repeat these affirmations regularly to reinforce the balanced energy of the second chakra.
- Crystal Healing: Crystals associated with the sacral chakra, such as carnelian, orange calcite, or moonstone, can aid in rebalancing. Place them on your sacral area during meditation or carry them with you throughout the day to enhance the healing process.
- Healthy Relationships: Nurturing healthy and balanced relationships can support the harmonious functioning of the sacral chakra. Surround yourself with people who encourage your creativity, respect your emotions, and support your personal growth.
- Balance Work and Play: Find a healthy balance between work and play in your life. Engage in activities that bring you joy and relaxation, and ensure that you have time for self-care and creative pursuits.
- Dance Therapy: Engage in dance as a form of therapy to connect with the energy of your sacral chakra. Put on some music and let your body move freely, allowing the rhythm and flow to guide you. Dance can be a powerful way to express emotions, release tension, and activate the creative energy of the second chakra.
- Healthy Pleasures: Cultivate a sense of healthy pleasure in your life. Engage in activities that bring you joy, whether it's spending time in nature, practicing self-care rituals, enjoying a delicious meal, or engaging in hobbies that bring you fulfilment. Be mindful of the activities that truly nourish your soul and prioritise them in your daily life.
- Healing Sounds and Music: Sound therapy can be beneficial for balancing the sacral chakra. Listen to music or sound frequencies that resonate with the second chakra, such as soothing or rhythmic melodies, nature sounds, or specific frequencies like 417 Hz or 288 Hz. Allow the vibrations to penetrate your body and harmonise the energy of your sacral chakra.
- Healthy Boundaries: Setting and maintaining healthy boundaries is crucial for sacral chakra balance. Learn to honour your own needs and desires, and communicate them clearly to others. Practise saying no when necessary and make choices that align with your values and well-being. This promotes a sense of empowerment and helps establish healthy relationships.
- Yin Yoga: Incorporate yin yoga poses that target the lower abdomen, pelvis, and hips. Poses like Butterfly (Baddha Konasana), Wide-Angle Seated Forward Bend (Upavistha Konasana), and Child's Pose (Balasana) can help release tension, increase energy flow, and activate the sacral chakra.
- Emotional Journaling: Set aside time to journal about your emotions and experiences related to the sacral chakra. Write freely and honestly, allowing your emotions to flow onto the pages. This practice can help you gain clarity, process emotions, and foster self-awareness.
- Intimacy and Connection: Cultivate deep and meaningful connections with others. Engage in activities that promote intimacy, such as open and honest conversations, sharing vulnerabilities, and expressing love and affection. Building healthy connections nourishes the sacral chakra and supports emotional well-being.
- Sacred Sexuality: Explore sacred sexuality practices that prioritise a holistic and mindful approach to sexual experiences. This may involve slowing down, cultivating presence, and connecting with your partner on a deeper level. Focus on the energetic and emotional aspects of intimacy, allowing the sacral chakra to be nurtured through the experience.
- Lunar Energy: The second chakra is associated with the moon and its cycles. Pay attention to the phases of the moon and the energetic shifts that occur during each phase. Engage in rituals or meditations that honor the moon's energy, such as moon gazing, setting intentions during the New Moon, or releasing what no longer serves you during the Full Moon.
Remember that each person's healing journey is unique, and it is essential to trust your own intuition and inner guidance. Explore these practices, adapt them to suit your needs, and be patient and compassionate with yourself as you work on rebalancing your second chakra.
